Al Gore and volunteers from The Climate Project meet to urge action at Copenhagen climate talks

12/17/09

Nobel Laureate and former US Vice President Al Gore met today with 94 volunteers from The Climate Project (TCP) during the final stage of the United Nations Climate Change Conference negotiations taking place in Copenhagen. Their aim is to encourage world leaders to reach an agreement before the conference concludes.

“TCP Presenters are in a direct dialogue with their communities about the climate crisis. They fully understand that people, regardless of their politics or profession, want global leaders to take strong action to avoid catastrophic climate change,” Mr Gore said.

Diplomats from 193 nations are in attendance at the UN climate change talks including more than 100 volunteers from The Climate Project. TCP Presenters traveled from 19 countries to Copenhagen to tell those present that their communities believe these negotiations are a necessary step for nations to agree on a plan to cut global carbon emissions.

TCP Indonesia Branch Manager Amanda Katili-Niode made the trip to Copenhagen along with 16 other TCP Presenters from Indonesia because she felt the experience would help her to improve as a climate change communicator. “By attending this conference I am gaining perspective on the international negotiation process and interacting with a truly global community,” said Katili-Niode.

TCP Presenters come from all walks of life. They have all been personally trained by Mr. Gore to deliver an updated version of the slide show featured in the Academy Award-winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth.  TCP's mission is to educate the public about the harmful effects of climate change and to work toward solutions at a grassroots level worldwide. TCP’s community of more than 3,000 presenters internationally have delivered 70,000 presentations, reaching a combined global audience of 7.3 million people.

“With the support of Mr. Gore, TCP will continue to do this important work in order to give the next generation a secure future,” said Jenny Clad, Executive Director of the Climate Project.
